What to Expect at Your First Chiropractor Appointment

Are you preparing for your very first visit to the chiropractor? For many, the first visit can come with uncertainty, unfamiliarity, and even anxiety. Perhaps you’ve combed the internet, reading reviews and first-hand experiences, both positive and negative. If you’ve never been, it can be difficult to distinguish fact from fiction and can leave you wondering if going will be worth it.

Take a deep breath.

We understand your concerns about the unknown. We are here to help calm your nerves by breaking down exactly what you can expect from your first appointment at the Chiropractor.

Who are Chiropractors, Anyways?

The first thing to understand is what being a Chiropractor entails. Chiropractors are registered doctors who go to school for the same amount of time as medical doctors do. They undergo a rigorous curriculum to understand the human body, with specialized training in bones, joints, the nervous system, exercise therapy, and nutrition. Considered a more holistic method within the medical field, chiropractic care focuses on spine and joint adjustment and manipulation, evaluating nerve function and body mechanics to get to the root cause of pain and injuries.

At Levi Chiropractic, we generally follow a 3-phase system for your recovery:

The 3 Phases of Treatment at Levi Chiropractic

1. Consultation and Pain Management

At your first visit, you will be asked a variety of questions – both general and specific – to better understand your needs, such as:

  • medical history
  • Symptoms
  • Severity
  • pain location
  •  movement limitations

Through these questions and evaluation, you’ll be presented with a unique pain management plan that may include:

  • Heat
  • Icing
  • Electric stimulation
  • Isolated Massage
  • Traction
  • Adjustments

2. Re-Evaluation

You can expect re-evaluations along your healing journey. This is to track progress and any needed changes to your recovery plan. You will continue receiving treatment through adjustments, electric stimulation, heating and icing. You may also receive stretches that you are able to do at home to help further your healing, as well as some deeper muscle work on an as-needed basis depending on the extent of the injury.

3. Exercise and Continued Treatment

As your body continues to heal, you’ll be given some simple exercises that can be done at home. These exercises are designed to help prevent future inflammation and injury by strengthening the muscles and joints surrounding the once, injured area.

It is common to recommend continued appointments with Dr. Levi at a less frequent case as a means of preventative care. If you experience chronic or high-level pain, it’ll be likely you will need ongoing care. A typical treatment plan involves weekly sessions, eventually reducing to monthly, with the ultimate goal of continuing care on an “as-needed” basis.
